What type of skin do I have?
How do I know what type of skin I have?
If you like to take care of yourself, or if you notice that your skin's appearance could be improved and you don't know where to start, it is important that you first know your skin type, in order to choose the most suitable products.
Each skin is unique, but they can be grouped into 4 general types, according to their level of oil secretion, from highest to lowest:
- Oily skin
- Mixed skin
- Normal skin
- Dry skin
Regardless of the level of oil secretion, which is closely linked to the level of hydration, we can also distinguish skin types according to their level of resistance to external agents, with this scale ranging from the healthiest skin to the most unbalanced skin and even skin with pathologies (eczema, rosacea, dermatitis, etc.).
If you suffer from any of the above-mentioned pathologies, we recommend that you contact a professional (dermatologist or pharmacy) to obtain appropriate treatment.
If your skin does not suffer from any pathology, and sometimes becomes red , continue reading below, because it is possible that you have combination or dehydrated oily skin, something quite common in many men.
So, to the 4 types of skin mentioned above, we could add a fifth type, which would be sensitive skin , or temporarily dehydrated skin, which is not the same as dry skin .
Keep reading to discover the characteristics of each skin type, as well as recommendations for proper facial care.
How to care for men's skin according to their skin type
Oily skin
-
It is characterized by excessive oil secretion, a tendency to sweat, and constant shine, especially in the T zone (forehead, nose and chin).
- You'll notice that you have oily skin when you get out of the shower, and without having applied any type of moisturizer, after a while you already feel the sweat and shine on your skin.
-
It is prone to open pores , blackheads , redness and pimples .
-
Irregular texture and apparently dirty.
- Oily skin is very common in teenagers, and in general men's skin is usually more oily than women's.
Advantages of oily skin:
The great advantage of oily skin is the absence of wrinkles . Wrinkles on the face appear because with age, the skin dries out, collagen and elastin are lost, and that is why wrinkles appear.
Disadvantages of oily skin:
The problem with oily skin is often premature sagging . Therefore, if you have oily skin, it is important to use appropriate products that regulate excess sebum to keep the skin firm and prevent sagging of the face and double chin.
Facial care recommendations for oily skin:
For oily skin, it is very important that facial cleansing is as gentle as possible to avoid the rebound effect and the skin producing even more sebum.
We recommend using a sebum-regulating spray due to its Witch Hazel extract content. This spray contains active ingredients only in aqueous form, it does not contain any type of vegetable oil so as not to add more oil to your skin.
And above all, your moisturizer should always be in gel format , to mattify the skin.
Our Anti-Stress Gel also contains Conifer extract to prevent sagging, which is so common in oily skin .
Mixed skin
- Combination skin is halfway between oily skin and normal skin.
- The oiliest areas are usually found on the forehead, nose and chin, the so-called T-zone.
- The driest areas are often on the cheeks and also on the neck.
Advantages of combination skin:
- With proper facial care, combination skin is easy to treat. However, you should pay attention to temperature changes, as well as the season of the year, or travel, as your combination skin can become unbalanced, leading to redness, acne and other problems.
Disadvantages of combination skin:
- Since it is an easy-care skin, we run the risk of paying little attention to it, and the big risk is using facial cleansing products that are too aggressive that can end up unbalancing our skin, causing what is known as dehydrated combination skin.
Facial care recommendations for combination skin:
- Detoxifying and respectful cleansing , sulphate-free and with pH5.
- An alcohol-free sebum-regulating spray for the T-zone.
- Moisturizer for men in gel texture , although in winter or cold seasons you can perfectly use a facial moisturizer in cream formulated for men .
Dry skin
The main characteristics of dry skin are:
- Tight, stiff skin, especially after shaving or showering.
- Deeper and more pronounced wrinkles and expression lines .
- Prone to peeling and flaking.
- Skin that appears old and dull.
Facial care recommendations for dry skin:
Here it is essential that you hydrate every morning and every night with a good anti-aging cream .
Our recommendation is that you use a 100% natural facial cream that does not contain petroleum-derived oils, such as paraffins, silicones, etc., which have been shown to dry out your skin even more.
It is also essential to cleanse your face with a cleanser that is as gentle as possible , always without sulphates (never use a conventional shower gel to clean dry skin on your face).
We also recommend extra hydration with an anti-aging serum . It contains a complex of two hyaluronic acids (low molecular weight and very low molecular weight) to achieve a powerful moisturizing and anti-aging action.
You can also include a revitalizing spray in your facial care routine to provide additional vitamins to your skin.
It is best to apply the revitalizing spray first after cleansing your face , then the serum , followed by the anti-aging cream .
Normal skin
Characteristics of normal skin:
- We could say that normal skin is the ideal skin, in the sense that it is the most balanced skin in terms of dryness and oil secretion.
- The texture is usually regular.
- You don't have any problems with pimples, redness or blemishes.
- Apparently soft, clean and healthy.
Facial care recommendations for normal skin:
You are lucky to have normal skin, but don't forget to moisturize it . The type of texture ( gel or cream ) will depend on the climate where you live and the time of year you are in.
If you live in a coastal area where there is a lot of humidity or in a hot climate, then our recommendation is a gel moisturizer .
If, on the other hand, you live in a dry or cold place, we recommend a moisturizing cream, but formulated specifically for men's skin .
And if you live in a climate where temperature changes are well marked throughout the 4 seasons, then the ideal is to vary the texture depending on the time of year.
In summer or hot weather, we recommend a gel moisturizer , and in winter or cold weather, hydration with a good anti-aging cream .
Sensitive skin
Characteristics of sensitive skin:
- Reaction to most skin care and shaving products, often causing skin irritation.
- Your skin tends to get red/irritated when you sunbathe or are very hot.
- Reaction to certain foods or fragrances, causing rashes or itching.
Facial care recommendations for sensitive skin:
- It is vital that you use a facial cleanser that is as gentle as possible .
- When drying your skin, always pat it dry, without rubbing.
- Avoid exfoliation, and always use a physical exfoliant.
- Avoid products with harsh chemical ingredients.
- If your skin becomes red after using any cosmetic product, rinse it with cold water until the reaction subsides.
- We recommend using a specific soothing serum for sensitive skin, such as our Skin Recovery Serum . It is formulated without perfume, and contains skin-recovering active ingredients such as cannabidiol, niacinamide and prebiotic.
- Always use a facial cream that protects you from external agents such as cold or pollution, and helps you keep your skin healthy and balanced.
